Where Is Ikebukuro's Red Light District? The West Exit (North) and the East Side
Ikebukuro Station is a large hub served by JR, Tokyo Metro, Tobu, and Seibu lines, and taking the wrong exit puts your destination on the other side of the tracks. Keep two things in mind before you set off (Wikipedia: Ikebukuro Station, in Japanese).
- Seibu is on the east side, Tobu on the west: the Seibu Ikebukuro Main Store stands on the east side of the station and Tobu Department Store on the west. Seibu is written with the character for "west" and Tobu with the character for "east", the reverse of where they stand, so follow the "East Exit" and "West Exit" signs rather than the department store names

Most of Ikebukuro's soaplands are clustered from around Nishi-Ichibangai, a short walk north of the West Exit (North), up to Tokiwa-dori, the street that runs east to west just north of it. It is a busy entertainment area lined with amusement facilities, restaurants, clubs, and other adult venues. Follow Tokiwa-dori east to the Ikebukuro-Ohashi-Nishi intersection at its end, turn left and head north, and you reach a love hotel area, which also has one soapland.

1. Do Not Follow Street Touts
Toshima City put its ordinance on preventing street solicitation into force in April 2015, and it continues to tackle touting through guidance and warnings from ward staff and patrols by a contracted security company. Malicious touts who ignore a formal recommendation can be charged an administrative fine (Toshima City: public safety and crime prevention measures, in Japanese). Tokyo Metropolitan ordinances also prohibit soliciting customers in public places. Shops that touts steer you to often have unclear prices, so do not follow them; research and choose shops yourself. 2. Acceptance of Foreigners and Prices Differ by Shop
Some soaplands in Ikebukuro accept foreign customers, but some turn away customers who do not speak Japanese. Even shops that accept foreigners may set different prices or conditions for them than for Japanese customers, so do not budget from the listed price alone. When you book, confirm the total for a foreign customer and how you can pay. 3. Bring Your Original Passport and Cash in Yen
